Bullitt County Greenway Report by University of Kentucky

Bullitt County Planning and Zoning KY245 Tourism District

Bullitt County Tourism Overlay Boundary

About

I am Rob Adams and running for Shepherdsville City Council. I've lived in Bullitt County most of my life and Shepherdsville for several years. I attended Cedar Grove Elementary, Shepherdsville Middle School, and Bullitt Central. From there, I went to Sullivan University and then served in the Marine Corps. My degrees are in IT and Business Management.

I've held numerous leadship roles throughout life. Currently I am Senior Manager, Global Systems and Integration at a Logistics Company. I manage the onboarding of our customers consisting of major brands apparel, home improvement, and sporting goods. I manage our global teams to integrate our systems with those of our customers. We have a very diverse team and offices all over the globe.

Family

I live here in Shepherdsville with my wonderful family; my wife, two daughters and a grandson. Of course I have an extended family and friends here as well.

I believe in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I have a unique experience with religion as my dad's family is Old Baptist and my mom's side of the family is Roman Catholic so studying the differences has taken me down some interesting paths. I am guided by my faith.

Vision, Planning, and Execution

I am a big picture guy. I want to market Shepherdsville for tourism and family fun. One way to do that is to have an indoor/year round farmers market. There is one in Paris, Ky, but one here would start to draw people to the city and revamp our image. It's the unique things that draw people to our city. Worlds largest skillet anyone? What if the farmers market also had outgates so each vendor could open at will, selling bread, honey, microgreens, preservatives, coffee, and local crafts all through the winter? That involves creative marketing to start drawing people in. I want a Reboot Shepherdsville Logo branding initiative to get our businesses and citizens excited and to help spread the word. This is just one of many ideas... We'll find the niche one way or another and bring our town back home.

With proper planning, we'll develop areas with a pleasing aesthetic. For example, CVS pharmacy wanted to build a cookie cutter store in Davidson, NC. The city government of Davidson conditionally agreed; but told CVS to bring their building to the curb, build a two story building, and put parking in the back. CVS was reluctant, but agreed. The aesthetics of Davidson's downtown district was retained. We need to get the hometown feel of Shepherdsville back and we need a historic district to make it happen.

When there is a vision and proper planning is applied, great things will happen; we just need the right people to see the big picture and execute the plan. Project Management, finance, and budgeting skills sees the project through to completion. Once a project is complete, the asset should be maintained correctly and continuously improved. This involves a team that can share the vision and work together for the common goal. It involves business savvy leaders to bring it all together. The team may not agree on everything but teamwork makes the dream work. We need to implement Bullitt County's tourism overlay and work with our surrounding neighbors to make positive change happen. Vote for me for a positive change in November!

We can legally have a paid area of the park. What if there was a paid area (Free day or free for Shepherdsville residents) that hosted a haunted park at Halloween and proceeds generated to fund other projects? We can get really creative on the events. WE NEED TO RUN THIS CITY LIKE A BUSINESS! We need business people that know how to make big things happen. I'm your guy.

A penny saved is a penny earned. I find creative ways to do so. I want to have a showcase of Landscapers in the park. (They could also use the aforementioned logo from above: Everything ties together.) There are many landscapers and plenty of customers. If we give each landscaping company a section to advertise in, with a placard on the ground within their work; they can advertise, potential customers can shop, and the park has free landscaping. It's a win-win-win!

I'm also going to revisit the flood basin concepts that were sidetracked in the past. One idea was to use a baseball field as a flood basin and the other involved an underground series of pipes. We've had flood issues throughout the history of Shepherdsville. These are compounded with warehouses that occupy land that is not absorbing water. Instead, these warehouses are shedding rainwater onto neighboring lands which have their own drainage to deal with. The flood basins will help alliviate that.

I want the city to buy a tree spade truck so that when we are doing projects in the park, we can move mature trees out by the expressway, to different areas of the park, or onto berms separating warehouses to help make us pretty. I would like to see a trail in the park much like the Gorilla Exhibit at the Louisville Zoo. If you've been to Boo at the Zoo, you know exactly what I'm talking about. Along the same lines, I want our Public Works department expanded, trained, and equipment purchased so we can start repaving roads without being reliant on outside sources; probably 10 roads per year. I don't want to be in a position where all roads need to be repaved now. That's a huge cost all at once and construction everywhere; I want it staggered out even if we outsource. We need additional roads to allievate traffic and we need to adopt the Bullitt County Comprehensive Plan into the Shepherdsville. (They were in place before annexation and we need to retain that.)

Many of you who work in Manufacturing have heard of the KAIZEN method of continuous improvement. I want to apply this method to the city, and I encourage community involvement. This also ties into the aforementioned branding campaign to help small business and the city get back to the downhome feel.

It is also important to inventory our assets as a city and build a plan to compliment those assets. We are in close proximity to Knobs State Forest, The Bourbon Trail, the Salt River, and historic landmarks, all of which could attract businesses such as Great Wolf Lodge, an Aquarium, The Village Shoppes in Gatlingburg (outdoor mall), and the list goes on. There are many smaller projects in mind to give our citizens of all ages a place to have fun without leaving the city. Vision and planning are necessary in order to market ourselves to attract the kinds of things the people want. You can always email, text, or call me and I hope to see you all along the campaign trail as well as the numerous meet and greets we have.

I have a lot of family and friends in this city and we're all aligned on making Shepherdsville great. José Cubero and I have been working together as well as several city council candidates. I am really impressed with his vision and leadership skills. My ideas fit with his vision. He is a big advocate to bringing back Shepherdsville Sports. It's important for youths to have something to do here as well as families. José will make an excellent Mayor; he's a business guy like me and has the skills to make big things happen. Also like me, he's proactive instead of reactive, knows how important teamwork is (compiled a great team with complimentary attributes), can see the big picture and execute the projects to see the vision to completion. I want you to be Rob-bed in November and like it. With my business sense and project managment skills, I will get things done. It's going to take teamwork on our part and I want to hear your input as you are the community we represent. I will work for you, Shepherdsville! Get excited for the changes, spread the word, and come back often for updates!
